Budapest Likely to Host Universiade 2019

With Baku, capital city of Azerbaijan withdrawing the application to host the 30th Summer Universiade, Budapest is now left with only one rival to compete with. The official website of International University Sports Association says the final decision will be made on Saturday's regular meeting in Brussels, whether Budapest or Brasilia will be the host of this event. The Hungarian University- and College Sport Association (MEFS) officially submitted its proposal of hosting the 30th Universiade in September. In the past Budapest has hosted this kind of sport event twice – the World Student Games in 1935 and the Universiade in 1965. This is an international multi-sport event with – aside from the Olympic Games – the most attendees from all over the world. At present, Summer Universiade has 13 obligatory sport events: athletics/track and field, basketball, fencing, soccer, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, judo, swimming, diving, water polo, table tennis, tennis and volleyball, in year 2017 and 2019, taekwondo and archery will also be added onto the compulsories. Having the privilege of adding three more sport events as the host of the Universiade, Hungary has chosen canoeing, modern pentathlon and handball as their optional events. The Universiade will bring five to six thousand athletes to the hosting country.
