China, Central and Eastern European Leaders Meet in Bucharest

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has met with his 16 counterparts from Central and Eastern European countries at a summit in the Romanian capital of Bucharest.
The state leaders have issued a guiding document following their summit, pledging to expand their cooperation, particularly when it comes to investment and infrastructure construction.



The group has agreed to provide more support to small and medium-sized enterprises and offer larger room to play an "active role" in bilateral trade.

"China-CEE trade accounts for one tenth of China-EU trade. But this means we have the potential for further development."
Li Keqiang has also issued a six-point proposal on deepening China's ties with Central and Eastern European countries.
"First, we need to strive to double our trade volume. In recent years, trade volumes have been doubled, but the figures are still modest. Let's double it again in the next five years."
Other proposals include enhancing cooperation on transportation infrastructure, new energy and finance, as well as expanding local government exchanges.
For his part, co-chair of the summit, Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta, says the region still has a lot of potential when it comes to trade and investment.
"We tried here to present the centre and the east of Europe as a dynamic region with a growing economy, oriented towards investments, with a significant development potential in various domains, and with important regional projects in energy and infrastructure."



As part of his time in Bucharest, Premier Li Keqiang has also overseen a deal which will see China construct a rail line linking Hungary and Serbia.
The Chinese delegation has also signed a high-speed rail deal with Romania.
