Vice Foreign Minister Song Tao Attends Annual Meeting of China-Central and Eastern Europe Cooperation Secretariat

On December 19, 2012, China-Central and Eastern Europe Cooperation Secretariat held its annual meeting in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing. Vice Foreign Minister and Secretary-general of the Secretariat Song Tao, Ambassadors of European Union Delegation and Central and Eastern European countries to China, members of the Secretariat, and representatives from the business and academic circles and the press attended the meeting. At the meeting, progress that has been made in cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European countries was reviewed and plans made for the Secretariat's work in 2013.
Song delivered a keynote speech, stressing that the China-Central and Eastern European leaders' meeting convened in Warsaw this April marked the advent of a new phase in the relations between China and Central and Eastern European countries. Over the last 7 months, the Vice Minister said, relevant parties have worked hard to put various cooperation initiatives into practice. As a result, cooperation in trade, cultural exchanges and tourism has already made headways, and government departments, localities and enterprises in both China and Central and Eastern European countries are all highly enthusiastic about their prospective cooperation. It has been proven that through accommodating each other's characteristics of development and needs and jointly adopting measures that cater to those needs, China and Central and Eastern European countries have not only effectively promoted their bilateral cooperation but also made important contribution to the all-round and balanced development of China-EU relations. Song said that, with their cooperation still in its infancy, China and Central and Eastern European countries should continue to expand their cooperation in the coming year, maintaining high-level exchanges as the leading field in bilateral cooperation and launching new cooperation initiatives to accommodate future developments.



For their part, Ambassadors of Poland and other countries said that the "twelve initiatives" the Chinese government proposed at the Warsaw leaders' meeting and the establishment of the China-Central and Eastern Europe Cooperation Secretariat gave full expression to China's willingness to strengthen cooperation with Central and Eastern European countries. With these actions, China has also put in place a platform conducive to bilateral cooperation and given a new impetus to EU-Chinese relations. Though with different national conditions, Central and Eastern European countries share an urgent desire to develop relations with China. When seeking better cooperation with China, they should make the best of the current opportunities and potential for cooperation and take full account of their own characteristics, which will not only contribute to their relations with China, but also their respective development and the overall improvement of EU-Chinese relations.
Participants also held in-depth and extensive exchanges on measures to promote cooperation between China and Central and Eastern Europe in 2013.
