BELGRADE, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Serbia hopes to play a prominent role as an exporter of agricultural products to China, Serbian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, Branislav Nedimovic, said Thursday at the opening ceremony of the "Agro Belgrade 2020" international fruit, viticulture and vegetable fair.

Cooperation on agriculture with China is one of the key elements of Serbia's plan to boost its exports, Nedimovic told Xinhua, adding that his country is working on promoting its potentials on the Chinese market and is looking intensify trade.

"We have produced a promotional video for Chinese national television, because we need to present our agricultural products to the Chinese market. We are also negotiating with China on establishing a hub that would help Serbia and its neighboring countries transfer their agricultural products to China. Our prime export items to China are beef, lamb and wine, and we are working on expanding this list," he told Xinhua.

In his keynote speech at the opening ceremony, Nedimovic said that his government wishes to boost agriculture and ensure the competitiveness of its products. It also intends to stimulate exports and simultaneously reduce the imports of goods that can be produced locally.

The "Agro Belgrade 2020" fair takes place between Jan. 30 and Feb. 1. On 25,000 square meters, it brings together 500 exhibitors, including leading local and international agricultural companies that display produce, machines, chemicals, software and packaging solutions.

The organizers wish to turn this fair into a major regional event. They expect 50,000 visitors, including wholesale buyers.

The event includes 12 conferences and roundtables dedicated to current challenges, such as the application of modern technological solutions in agriculture, organic production, the European Union's (EU) agricultural policies and the impacts of climate change on food production.
