City of Constanta, designated "European City of Sport"

The city of Constanta (south-eastern Romania) was designated on November 6, in a ceremony held at the European Parliament in Brussels, as the "European City of Sport," according to a press release for AGERPRES.
According to the cited source, earning this title is the result of the collaboration between Constanta local authorities, Social Democrat MEP Catalin Ivan, who promoted the city's image at European level, and PSD Constanta MP Radu Babus.
MEP Catalin Ivan says that sport should be promoted at all levels, pointing out that this title would bring Constanta economic gains for its local community.
"If we promote sport, we promote a healthy lifestyle, and that shows the need for sport to occupy an important place on the politicians' agenda. Constanta's earning the title of the European City of Sport in 2014 will bring significant gains to the local community, which will be felt economically in a direct way by Constanta residents. Under the umbrella of this title, the authorities can organize next year many sports competitions and thus they can bring added value to the community. I am glad I have managed to team up with the people in Constanta and that we have succeeded in gaining this title," said Ivan.
The cities of Iasi and Pitesti received the title of "European City of Sport" in 2012 and 2013 respectively.
