Algerian army captures weapons, ammunition

The Algerian Defense Ministry said Thursday that its army captured a major consignment of weapons on Wednesday in the province of Adrar.
The seizure included a machine gun, a Kalashnikov assault rifle, two Siminov semi-automatic rifles, and "a significant load of ammunition of different calibres," official APS news agency quoted a statement of the ministry as saying.
Algeria has been cracking down on weapons smuggling to boost security in the country.
In March 2012, a special unit of the national army foiled two potential suicide attacks targeting headquarters of the army and the national gendarmerie in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, arresting four militants and seizing two explosive belts, four machine guns and grenades.
That raid came one week after a suicide attack on headquarters of the National Gendarmerie in Tamenrasset, which injured more than 30 people.
