Alexandru Victor MICULA, National Coordinator of Romania

Alexandru Victor Micula was appointed Secretary of State on the 19th of February 2016. A career diplomat, Alexandru Victor Micula began working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in February 1996, as Third Secretary within the Directorate for Neighbouring Countries and New Independent States. Throughout his diplomatic career, he has served both at the Ministry's Headquarters, as well as in the diplomatic service abroad. Thus, from 2011 to 2016 he was Romania's Ambassador to Hungary, and from 2009 to 2011, he was Romania's Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark and the Republic of Iceland. In 2014, Alexandru Victor Micula was appointed Secretary of the Danube Commission.

From 2008 to 2009, he served as the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From June 2007 to June 2008, he was the National Coordinator for the Organisation of the NATO Summit in Bucharest (as Deputy Secretary of State from June to November 2007, and afterwards, as Secretary of State, from November 2007 to June 2008).

Alexandru Victor Micula served as Director General for Strategic Policies from February to June 2007 within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In November 2002, Mr. Micula was appointed Romania's Ambassador to the Republic of Argentina and the Republic of Paraguay, a position he held until February 2007. Before assuming the role of Ambassador, he was the Chief of Staff of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From August 1999 to January 2001, he was President of the Informal Financial Committee of the OSCE at the Permanent Mission of Romania to the International Organizations in Vienna. He served at the Romanian Embassy in Budapest from November 1997 to August 1999. Prior to this period, from October 1996 to November 1997, he worked within the Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

For his achievements in the diplomatic service, he was awarded the Order Faithful Service (Romania, 2002), the Grand Cross of The Order of the Liberator General San Martin (Republic of Argentina, 2007), The Diplomatic Merit Order (Romania, 2007) and the Meritorious Service Medal (NATO, 2008).

He graduated from the Faculty of Economics of Industry, Constructions and Transports within the Academy for Economic Studies (Bucharest) and from the European Center for Security Studies "George C. Marshall", in the field of defence economics (Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany). He is also a graduate of the National Institute for Administration (Bucharest).

Before entering the diplomatic corps, Mr. Micula worked as chief accountant for Romania Leasing SA Bucharest (1994-1996) and at COEMN Ltda Copiapo Chile (1992-1994). He was also director for Human Resources at SIMBAC SA, Oradea (1990-1992).

He is fluent in Spanish, English and has a satisfactory knowledge of Hungarian.

He was born in 1966, is married and has two daughters.
