On October 18, 2026, local time, Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić met with Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, in Podgorica.
Spajić asked Wang Yi to convey his sincere greetings to the Chinese leadership. He noted that both the warm reception he had received from the Chinese side when attending a meeting in China in June this year and the Chinese Foreign Minister's visit today demonstrate the importance China attaches to Montenegro-China relations. Montenegro and China share common historical memories and a traditional friendship, having both resisted fascism and foreign aggression during the Second World War. Montenegro highly values China's status and influence as a major country, and appreciates China's responsible efforts to curb rising global oil prices amid the conflicts in the Middle East, which have helped Montenegro and other small and medium-sized countries weather the energy crisis, demonstrating China's sense of responsibility and commitment as a major country.
Spajić stated that in recent years, Montenegro has achieved sound economic and social development, with Chinese enterprises helping Montenegro successfully complete the construction of the north-south expressway. The two sides are now cooperating to restore the Đurđevića Tara Bridge, a project of great historical significance that has brought the two peoples closer and serves as the best testimony to the traditional friendship between the two sides. China has always been Montenegro's most important partner on its development path, and deepening cooperation with China meets the expectations of the Montenegrin people and enjoys broad public support. Montenegro is ready to continue moving forward side by side with China, plan cooperation in areas such as tourism, infrastructure, and green transition, carry out exchanges of governance experience, and accelerate the realization of their respective development and revitalization. Montenegro welcomes the new consensus reached through the China-EU trade and investment consultation mechanism, and believes that enhanced communication and cooperation between Europe and China- close partners and two major forces and markets in the world-are conducive to global stability and development.

Wang Yi conveyed the good wishes of the Chinese leadership to Spajić, stating that China and Montenegro have always been good friends on the path of development and revitalization. The two sides respect and support each other on issues concerning their respective core interests and major concerns, which has served as an important guarantee for the sound and steady development of bilateral relations. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Montenegro, an important year for building on past achievements and opening up new prospects. China is ready to explore with Montenegro the elevation of the positioning of bilateral relations, continuously deepen exchanges and cooperation in various fields, and be long-term and trustworthy strategic partners for each other.
Wang Yi said that China and Montenegro share much in common. Both peoples are unafraid of bullying and firmly defend their national dignity, both achieved victory in the World Anti-Fascist War, and both should remain vigilant against the resurgence of militarism. Both countries uphold and practice multilateralism and oppose a return to the “law of the jungle.” Both advocate economic globalization, safeguard free trade, and resist all forms of conservatism and isolationism. Both maintain that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and peaceful political means. The Đurđevića Tara Bridge connects the hearts of the two peoples and carries both the history and future of bilateral relations. China’s assistance in restoring the bridge is of great historical and social significance. China understands Montenegro’s efforts to join the EU and believes that this is fully compatible with strengthening Montenegro’s relations with China. China hopes that Montenegro will provide fresh impetus for the sound development of China-EU relations.
