Children the most vulnerable poverty-stricken category in Serbia

Poverty in Serbia strikes 9.2% of the total population and children under 14 are the most vulnerable category. This is according to a report on activities conducted between the Serbian government and UNICEF. The report reads that the poverty rate among children has almost doubled in the past several years and that almost 50% of Roma families are living in poverty.
The cooperation with UNICEF has resulted in the improvement of all the rights in the field of the protection of children, said Health Minister Slavica ?uki? Dejanovi?. One of the priorities of her ministry is to encourage children's development at an early age and also protect children from maltreatment and neglect in a bid to realize the rights of children with impeded development. Our future task is to shift focus from a child to the whole family as the early stage of development is essential for the subsequent development of one's personality, she said.
Minister of Sports and Youth Vanja Udovi?i? said it was necessary to work with children more in order that they would not feel neglected at all levels, which especially refer to children from the most vulnerable social groups.
