Albanian gov't to crack down on illegal internet gambling

Albanian Minister of Innovation Milena Harito said Tuesday that government will crack down on illegal Internet gambling operations, according to local ATA news agency.
In her remarks at round-table meeting on information technology, Harito said that "government will ban the activity unlicensed companies involved in illegal internet gambling operations, although the process is difficult and requires time."
"Our goal is to ban companies that have not been awarded license to operate in the territory of the Republic of Albania. But the process requires time, at least several months, until relevant bodies are established and we are working with international partners in this respect," Harito said.
Harito explained that Albanian betting companies which have due license to operate in this sector will not have their activity banned. Pointing to the government's initiative to crack down on illegal internet gambling operations and unauthorized internet sites, Harito highlighted the close cooperation with gambling operators and the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority.
"These internet sites have not been authorized to operate in the Republic of Albania and they generate large amounts of income that are illegally transferred abroad," she stated.
